Ever wanted to track your beard progress?

Mike Hall, creator of the iOS app "Watch Me Change", recently reached out to tell us about his neat app (http://www.watchmechangeapp.com/). It allows you to easily track the progress of your facial hair journey using your devices camera. You can pick how many times a day/week/month you want to photograph yourself, and let the app to the rest. Once you're satisfied with your progress, the app can make an awesome time lapse video from all of the photos of your bearded escapades. Sweet!

Mike was gracious enough to give Beard Advocate three free download codes. If you'd like to give the app a shot email us (or reach out on Twitter/Facebook) and we'll give you a promo code!

Thanks Mike!

Beardfluff: Comics and art

Over the weekend I was contacted by a gentleman named Rembrand. He runs a most excellent web site called Beardfluff, and he wanted to share it with you all. As you may have already guessed, beards are the main topic of the web site, and Rembrand has drawn some hilarious comics about them. Here are a few of his favorites:

Interview with a Beard Advocate

Robert in PA recently sent in a great email:

Beard Advocate,

I am a student at Penn State University and for my speech class I am doing a persuasive presentation on why you should grow a beard/ support beard growth in others, and I would greatly appreciate it if you would take a few minutes and answer a very small amount questions...

Here are Robert's questions and my answers:

1. A person makes a remark regarding that beards are unprofessional, what would your retaliation be to this?

I would simply ask that person to take a look back in history at the daunting number of influential, powerful, and respected men who had beards. Leonardo Da Vinci, Abraham Lincoln, Jesus, Zeus, Ernest Hemingway, John Lennon, James Lipton. I don't think anyone would call any of those men unprofessional. Don't you agree?

2. What are some tips to reduce itching and beard dandruff?

A clean beard is a happy beard. Make sure that you shampoo your beard regularly, it is hair afterall! Beardruff is (I believe) a result of dry skin. If you use moisturizer on your face regularly you should be AOK. If you take care of your beard, it will take care of you.

3. What would you say to a person in the first stages of growing a beard, who is becoming discouraged?

Patience is the most important aspect of beard cultivation. Yes, it may itch for a week or two, but the end result is well worth it. People may also may comment that it's "patchy" or "sketchy", but they are just jealous. Once they see your glorious face-mane they will change their tune.

If you're still having a lot of trouble growing a beard, you may need to consult a Beard Coach. This could be an encouraging friend who already has a beard, or even a professional Beard Coach (see www.beardcoach.com).

4. In one or two sentences, what would you say to someone to convince them to grow a beard?

Think of the most awesome people you know. They all have beards don't they? Grow one, you have nothing to lose.

If anyone else has anything valuable to say regarding Robert's questions, please post a comment, send us a Tweet or Email. We'd love to post it here!

Thanks again for being an advocate Robert!

CONTEST: Warm weather shaving - win a free BA T-shirt!

Right around a month ago I was shoveling 3+ feet of snow from my driveway (and lost my iPhone in the process, incidentally - which ended up surfacing 3 weeks later and works perfectly by the way). This past weekend, however, was the first day that folks in the local neighborhood were wearing shorts, riding bikes, washing cars, and packing the playground. April 1st is the day that I personally shoot for changing my car over from winter tires back to my summer tires (Bridgestone RE 050A PPs) and also the time that I bid farewell to my full-faced beard in favor of a more conservative (and cooler) alternative. It's a bittersweet time every year I go through it and it got me to thinking - why not try to make it a little fun?

I was thinking a while back that we'd solicit our readers (and soon-to-be-readers since we know you're going to tell your friends, right?) for some before and after pictures, but I'd like to amend that a little bit. I ask you to send us not just before and after, but also *DURING* pictures - and that's where the fun can be had. While you are shaving off your beard (assuming you are - for those who stick it out through the hot months, we salute you), get creative with what you intend to remove. Are you religious? How about a cross, star of david, or some other symbol? Creative? Go paisley. Daring? Let's see some lightning bolts. Beard advocate? We challenge you to sculpt some smiley faces or even the beard advocate logo. After you have crafted your masterpiece, send us the pictures. We will select a winner who will receive a free beard advocate T-shirt. Sorry, folks - beardadvocate.org blog contributors are not eligible, though we will participate in the fun.

Send in your entries to contact[at]beardadvocate[dot]org and we will select a winner. The contest is open starting now and will end on April 30th. The winner will be selected and announced by May 7th.

Happy growing (and shaving) everyone!

Behold! The Beard Advocate onion ring!

There is no better tale than that of a mere mortal finding the effigy of a religious figure in an everyday item. Jesus' likeness on a potato chip, Buddah on a piece of burnt toast, Elvis in a corndog, etc.

Beard Advocate reader Josh from MA found our logo in an onion ring whilst eating dinner with his family! Surely a sign that we all must continue to advocate our beardedness, and spread the good word!

Behold:

It's beautiful, isn't it?

Thanks Josh!

F1 star Jenson Button shaved his beard!

While we here at Beard Advocate wish Jenson Button a (belated) happy 30th birthday, we're sad that he decided to mark the occasion by shaving his longstanding beard. In the world of F1, a driver with a nice face of scruff is a rarity. RIP Jenson's beard, you will be missed.

Bearded advertising

Normally I don't like to link to shameless ad campaigns, but when they involve beards (and James Lipton), I simply must:

Nicely done LG!
